I have had the privilege of providing dating certificates for the VVC
and VCB since the beginning of 2006 and so far have issued over 500 certificates. The majority of machines requiring ‘validation’ are now
coming from Bali, Vietnam and Indonesia. All these machines have
one thing in common – they claim to be original Italian machines.

REGISTERING A VESPA SCOOTER

The Club regularly receives enquiries regarding registering or re-registering of Vespa scooters.

The Club can assist you by providing a Dating Certificate stating the date of manufacture of the machine that will be accepted by the DVLA .

This Certificate is a requirement of the DVLA and determines the type of Age Related number to be issued.

Need to Register or Re-register your Vespa?

Machines that have not been previously registered in the UK will require DVLA form V55/5, Dating Certificate (available from the Vespa Club), MOT (if manufactured after 31/12/59), Insurance Certificate , a photograph of the machine and the appropriate Road Tax fee (if applicable).
In effect this means that the scooter should be complete and roadworthy as Inspection may be required by VOSA (now DVSA).
All being well an Age Related Registration Number will be allocated.

Owners of Vespas that have UK registration numbers should check with DVLA whether the number is still available for retrieval.
If available, you will need DVLA form V765 (downloadable from DVLA website), DVLA form V55/5, a photograph of the Vespa and a document linking the VIN to the Registration Number.
This should be a sales receipt (dated before 1983), archive document (or Authenticated Copy) of the original registration information or original Buff or Green Log Book (or authenticated copy). If you do not wish to send original documents to DVLA , send a photocopy AND the original to me and I can stamp and sign the copies as authenticated copies. These will be accepted by DVLA.
This MAY be available from Local Council Archives or Private Collections. Many Councils destroyed their records as instructed by DVLA upon computerization of registrations but others did not and some records found their way into private trusts or collections
When applying for authenticated copies from record offices, archives , trusts or private collections , ensure that the information contains the VIN . Records without the VIN connection will not be accepted by the DVLA.
Retention of an old registration Number is entirely at the discretion of the DVLA.
Just for your Information
Italian manufactured Vespas have a Number with a prefix beginning with the letter ‘V’ for both engine and chassis numbers.
Please note that numbers prefixed with IGM, GM or OM are not frame numbers but may be included with your submitted information as an additional means of identifying the machine.
If you have any documentation including a foreign registration number, this should be included with your application.

To apply for a Dating Certificate please send:-
• 4 Photographs, one from the front, rear and each side. The photo from the engine side should have the panel removed and the seat raised.
• A photocopy of all/any paperwork that you may have relating to the machine. (please do not send originals unless you require Authenticated copies, in which case send with the photocopies.). If the Vespa is from Vietnam, do not include copies of customs forms.
• Photos or pencil rubbings of any numbers on the frame and the engine number including the prefix where applicable together with an indication of the position where the numbers appear on the frame.
• Your contact details (phone number , land line if possible and e-mail address.)
• A cheque for £10 payable to ‘VVC (UK) Ltd.’.
• A Stamped Addressed Envelope with the correct postage. In most cases only a Certificate will be returned.
• Information sent by Recorded/Special Delivery that requires a signature may be subject to delay.
• Post to:- W. Drake, 23, Archers Road, EASTLEIGH, Hants. SO50 9AQ.
• If we cannot adequately identify a Vespa your fee will be returned.
• Please be aware that some imported Vespas are not necessarily the model they are badged as.
